How it works

Print size is just pixel count divided by print resolution. An image 6000 pixels wide prints 20 inches wide at 300 PPI, or 40 inches at 150 PPI, from exactly the same file.

300 PPI is the traditional standard, based on what the eye resolves at close reading distance. It is the right target for anything held in the hand, but it is often more than a large print needs, because viewing distance grows with print size. A wall-sized print viewed from three metres holds up at 150 PPI or lower.

A note on terminology: this calculation is PPI, pixels per inch, describing your image. DPI counts a printer's ink dots and is a different and much higher number, since printers use many dots to reproduce a single pixel. The two get used interchangeably, but only PPI is what this works with.

The formula

print dimension = pixel dimension / PPI

Multiply inches by 2.54 for centimetres. No upscaling is assumed; the result is what your existing pixels support natively.

Frequently asked questions

What PPI do I actually need?
300 for prints viewed up close, 200 for something on a desk, 150 or less for large wall art. Match it to how far away people will stand rather than defaulting to 300 for everything.
Can I print larger than this?
Yes, by upscaling. Modern machine-learning upscalers do this convincingly, and large prints are forgiving because of viewing distance. This calculator shows the native limit, not a hard ceiling.
Why doesn't the result match a standard frame size?
Because your sensor's aspect ratio rarely matches standard frames. A 3:2 camera file does not fit an 8×10 without cropping. Use the aspect ratio calculator to work out what you will lose.
